MARK WALLINGER: STATE BRITAIN DUVEENS COMMISSION

MARK WALLINGER: STATE BRITAIN DUVEENS COMMISSION

State of Britain

15 JANUARY – 27 AUGUST 2007

Mark Wallinger has recreated peace campaigner Brian Haw’s Parliament Square protest. Running along the full length of the Duveen Galleries, State Britain consists of a meticulous reconstruction of over 600 weather-beaten banners, photographs, peace flags and messages from well-wishers that have been amassed by Haw over the past five years.

I believe this will really take my work that extra mile and create a strong impact on all of my audience as people can relate in one way or another the only problem I may face is offending people. I want to cover sensitive subjects in a careful way.

Fernando Orellana VOICE

Fernando Orellana

Voice –

The robots in the installation Voice are designed to create an automated protest, moving protest signs up and down like a human protester might. Unlike their human counterparts, these robot activists will never grow weary or become distracted from their cause. They will loudly and stoically carry on their protest, until power is removed from them or their mechanical parts fail. As always, the robots will take on the tasks that we may find difficult to commit to or are reluctant to engage in.

this piece really spoke to me about mine, although I liked it dont think it was as powerful as it could have been. after looking at this I think I'm going to add lots of colour to really make you look and read each sign to show how many things people are fighting for and what needs to change.

If anything, art is... about morals, about our belief in humanity. Without that, there simply is no art.
Ai Weiwei
The aim of activist artists is to create art that is a form of political or social currency, actively addressing cultural power structures rather than representing them or simply describing them. In describing the art she makes, the activist artist Tania Bruguera said, ‘I don’t want art that points to a thing. I want art that is the thing’.
Activist art is about empowering individuals and communities and is generally situated in the public arena with artists working closely with a community to generate the art.
Some artists concerned with activist art, are also involved in direct action, like the Women On Waves Foundation, a feminist art collective that runs a floating abortion clinic, carrying out abortions in places where they are not legal.
